Home to Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor, Mount Desert Island, off the coast of Maine, is known as one of the most beautiful points of New England. If you view the island from the air, you would notice north and south aligned gouges scooped out of the land as if by a very large hand. Indeed, in this case, the hand was that of a huge, slow moving, continental glacier over a mile high; two miles thick in some places. When this giant glacier finally melted and retreated, it left rounded mountaintops, long lakes, many boulders, and the 7-mile long Somes Sound. With its beaches, sweeping cliffs and mountains, the island offers visitors numerous recreational activities, from hiking, biking and following nature trails to swimming, sailing and kayaking. Exploring the wonders of Acadia is what makes this stunningly beautiful Maine island a natural marvel that should be experienced from every avenue.
When visiting Mount Desert Island, Bar Harbor is a main tourist destination. It is a historic tourist town, offering salty sea air, soft sandy beaches, granite cliffs and a slew of activities for the outdoor enthusiast. A 19th century resort for the wealthy, the town has several mansions, old majestic hotels and other vestiges of its heyday. Stop by the Hulls Cove Visitor Center to stock up on information about Acadia National Park. Golfers can tee off at the scenic Kebo Golf Club, one of the oldest courses in the U.S. For a unique adventure, take a boat excursion with Diver Ed, where you can watch Ed diving 50 feet below on the deck monitor and then learn about the starfish, sea urchins and other sea creatures he retrieves and then returns to their home.
