Newport is most renowned for hosting the America's Cup sail race from 1851 to 1984. During this time the cup was held by the United States and the New York Yacht Club. This represents the longest winning streak in an organized sport.
The cup left Newport in 1984 when the Australians won it, but the city's allure as a destination resort only increased. Today, Newport hosts the US Navy War College, many of the 12 meter sailing yachts that competed for the America's Cup over the years, the International Tennis Hall of Fame, professional golf championships and more.
Newport has a multitude of fine restaurants and bars, many of which overlook Newport Harbor and the Newport Beaches. |
