This screening is part of the five-month city-wide art collaboration--Cross Pollination 2011, spearheaded by the Gallery of Contemporary Art (GOCA) at UCCS. Vanishing of the Bees is an in-depth investigation to discover the causes & solutions behind Colony Collapse Disorder; a phenomenon where honeybees vanish from their hives, never to return. This phenomenon has brought beekeepers to crisis in an industry responsible for producing apples, broccoli, watermelon, onions, cherries & a hundred other fruits & vegetables. Commercial honeybee operations pollinate crops that make up one out of every three bites of food on our tables. Movie-goers who arrive early can enjoy a “Bee Happy Hour,” with lemonade, Bristol Brewing Beehive beer or Meade, plus visit with all of the organizations who have info booths, view art made in beeswax by FutureSelf youth artists, & participate in family bee-related activities in the foyer & hallways of the theater. Following the film, an expert panel will discuss ways this crisis is playing out in our local community & talk about the simple ways people can take action at home & in their community.
