North Fork, New York Wineries & farm stands
The North Fork of Long Island is the third largest wine-growing region in America, and the fastest-growing wine region in New York State. The first winery was established on the North Fork in 1973, and today there are more than 40 wine producers in the area who farm 3,000 acres of vineyards.
The area’s mild maritime climate, long growing season, and sandy soil make the conditions perfect for growing quality grapes and producing world-class wines. The most popular red wines produced are Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc. Most popular whites are Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Riesling.
Most wineries offer tastings and guided tours and many feature fun festivities such as live music, dances, poetry readings, and vineyard walks. It’s common to find a picnic area at a vineyard, and wine lovers are encourage to enjoy a vintage while dining al fresco.
