STARS: Diavolo Dance Theater Date: February 7, 2012 Time: 12PM Location: Vilar Performing Arts Center ABOUT DIAVOLO DANCE THEATER: “A straightforward playfulness with props and physicality that elicits cheers from the audience…admirably smooth performers… execute it with impressive silkiness.”- The New York Times What do you get when you combine a massive teeter-totter structure — be it a giant cube that turns into a pyramid, a huge spinning wheel or a ship-like platform — with a group of dancers trained in ballet, modern dance, martial arts and acrobatics? The answer is Diavolo: exhilarating dance architecture that offers a cinematic experience, eliciting gasps and cheers from the audience. The dancers of Diavolo ricochet from one end of the stage to the other, slithering in and out of apertures and flinging themselves at 45-degree angles. By leaping, flying and twirling on and around these props, the dancers create metaphors for the challenges of relationships, the absurdities of life and the struggle to maintain our humanity in an increasingly technological world. GRADES: 4-8 CIRRICULUM CONNECTIONS: Trust, collaboration, creativity, physicality, artistry. TICKETS: Tickets are $11c/$14a, and will be on sale fall 2011. ABOUT STARS: The STARS (Support The Arts Reaching Students) series of performances is offered to promote artistic, educational and cultural enrichment to local students with in-school workshops and daytime shows at the theatre.
