Looking for a unique remote getaway? Travel to the Outer Banks where part of its charm is the remoteness of the area. Once you either take the ferry or drive over one of the bridges that connect the Outer Banks to the mainland, you feel far removed from the rest of the world. The Outer Banks is stranded farther away from its main coast than any other barrier island in the world and you can feel the distance from all the hustle and bustle as soon as you step food on the island.
Many people have proven themselves to be quite the adventurer while visiting the Outer Banks. From Blackbeard the pirate and his band of buccaneers to the Wright brothers who proved airpower to the world, the Outer Banks is known for its adventure seekers. Today’s adventurers get their choice of Kite Surfing, Jet Skiing, hang gliding, surfing, fishing, or just take it easy and stroll the beaches. During all this adventure, don’t forget to take a short break and tour the area’s beautiful Lighthouses, which have guided sailors for centuries.
On the other side of adventure is entertainment, a key component that can make or break your trip. The Outer Banks offers a wide variety of artist galleries and artist demonstrations, musicians, poets, and comedians. A great place to go, if traveling as a family, is Roanoke Island’s Waterside Theatre and watch acclaimed historical production The Lost Colony, our nation’s longest-running outdoor summer theater drama.
If all the activities, that the Outer Banks offers, is making you hungry then stop by one of the many restaurants in the area that almost always offer its guest fresh shrimp, crab, and dozens of species of fresh-caught fish. Despite its rise as a favorite destination, the Outer Banks continues to be a casual place to vacation. So leave the suit and tie at home and tell the girls to leave their high heels at home. The Outer Banks is the perfect place to kick back and relax.
