Once you either take the ferry or drive over one of the bridges that connect the Outer Banks to the mainland, you feel far removed from the rest of the world. Today’s adventurers get their choice of Kite Surfing, Jet Skiing, hang gliding, surfing, fishing, or just take it easy and stroll the beaches. During all this adventure, don’t forget to take a short break and tour the area’s beautiful Lighthouses, which have guided sailors for centuries.
On the other side of adventure is entertainment, a key component that can make or break your trip. The Outer Banks offers a wide variety of artist galleries and artist demonstrations, musicians, poets, and comedians. A great place to go, if traveling as a family, is Roanoke Island’s Waterside Theatre and watch acclaimed historical production The Lost Colony, our nation’s longest-running outdoor summer theater drama.
If all the activities, that the Outer Banks offers, is making you hungry then stop by one of the many restaurants in the area that almost always offer its guest fresh shrimp, crab, and dozens of species of fresh-caught fish. Despite its rise as a favorite destination, the Outer Banks continues to be a casual place to vacation. So leave the suit and tie at home and tell the girls to leave their high heels at home. Tidewater Virginia's talented multi-generational Hurrah Players presents this action-packed summer extravaganza with Troy, Gabriella and the rest of the Wildcats who finish their junior year and blast onto the summer scene.
Three photographers, Michael Halminski, Eve Turek, and Ray Matthews, will showcase their work in the Art Gallery at Roanoke Island Festival Park from Aug. 1-30.
