It is plain to see that Chichester is a Georgian city. One must look a bit farther though to find its medieval aspects. On a sunny day you can discover the colour of Tudor and Georgian brickwork, mellow tiling and grey flints. Dr Thomas Sharp has commented: '.... the city has few rivals, and certainly none among the smaller towns'.
The four main streets lay out much like a compass rose. The design follows the Roman and medieval plan. Although the old city was walled and thus is limited is size, there are unusually fine areas of park and gardens. If you are willing to spend some time walking, you will find Chichester a deeply rewarding experience. Behind the main streets you become aware of antiquity that modern facades sometimes disguise.
William Camden described the City of Chichester in the 16th century: 'The city hath four gates, opening to the four quarters of the world'. The old gates have now gone but much of the Roman wall remains together with the cosmopolitan view of the world.
